Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Being on the road, on the "mother of all roadies," Jim asked for a "Quad Yeah!"
Jim Rome is in Florida for the week, broadcasting live from the Super Bowl's "Radio Row." He told us it was raining heavily! Pictures and videos of their location were put up on Jim's Facebook page. Kyle Brandt made the trip with Jim. Also joining Jim today is Richard Machowicz, Jim's friend and former Navy Seal known on the show for telling Jim to take cold showers to "cut a toughness groove in your brain."
Today's show and the entire week is interview heavy.
(With the large number of interviews, sumaries will be condensed on this blog this week.)
Super Bowl
Jim began, "First major developing story...Dwight Freeney may have a torn ligament in his ankle." He went on to tell us that the Colts are denying that report. Jim , "...It may or may not be torn, but it's clearly jacked up...That's a brutal development for the Colts...Ankle sprain, ankle tear...either way, 93 isn't coming off the blind side with the same sort of ruckus..."
Text
"Dear Rome Depot, We would personally like to welcome you to Miami. Yours, blow, hookers, salsa music, leisure suits, drug cartels, and old people." Matt
(Jim said he didn't see any of these, except a few old people, since he's been there.)
Interviews
Don Banks (CNNsi)
He talked about Dwight Freeney and his injury. Don said it didn't look good for him to play. He thinks it will have a significant impact on the game.
Don gave some thoughts on the Pro Bowl also.
Rocky Blier (NFL legend) and General Richard Thomas
Jim asked of Rocky's story in Vietnam. Rocky's foot was severely injured by a grenade in the Vietnam War, yet he was able to return and play in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rocky and General Thomas also talked about today's veterans, post traumatic stress syndrome, and help for veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mike Silver (Yahoo sports)
Mike started by talking about Kurt Warner and his retirement announcement. Jim asked if Kurt may return as Brett Favre did. Mike thinks Kurt is really done. Mike also told an old story about former Cowboys coach Barry Switzer.
Takes
Grammy Awards
Jim brought up last night's Grammy Awards and did his bit of inserting Billy Sims famous "Boomer" yell (From the Heisman ceremony in '08) into winners' announcements.
Rex Ryan
The Jets coach was in Miami and attended an MMA card. He was interviewed and heckled. He told the crowd the Jets would beat the Dolphin twice next year. Ryan was photographed giving someone the middle finger at the event.
More Interviews
Phil Simms (CBS Sports)
Phil's main take was on Tim Tebow and his Senior Bowl performance and his NFL hopes. Phil thought it was a mistake for Tebow to even play in the Senior Bowl. He said Tebow has missed out on 4 years of playing in a pro style offense and taking the ball from under center. Tebow did not have a good performance. Simms felt the game hurt Tebow's chances to be taken in the draft as a quarterback.
Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars)
The Jaguar RB made was excited to have played in the Pro Bowl this year.
Maurice brought up how Rome has "been there" since before he was drafted. Ask about players he looked at growing up, MJD said he liked the toughness of Jack Tatum. He said he liked to hit hard like Tatum when he (MJD) played defense in high school.
Kyle's Question
Kyle had been on air a few minutes when he posed a question to Richard Machowicz. He asked him what his "move" would be if he (Kyle) "came over the table" at him. Jim told Kyle, "You're going down the wrong street, my friend." Richard said a little later, "I don't fight. I just end threats."
