Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
BCS National Championship Game
Rome: "Most people out here think that the game is going to be tight. It's going to be a battle. But I'm having a hard time finding anybody out here who's not rocking the burnt orange who think that the Longhorns are going to beat Alabama...I'm just having a hard time finding people who think so. Of course that's exactly what everybody thought back in '06 when UT was going up against heavily favored USC. And we all remember how that game turned out...I would love to see Mack get another one. I just don't see it happening. Not tonight."
Boxing
Pacquiao vs Mayweather
Jim told us that promoter Bob Arum is saying that the fight is officially dead. Jim then said, "Awesome. It's not like anybody wanted to see that, or that it would've been the richest fight in the history of the sport or anything."
The reason is the demand by Floyd Mayweather Jr. that there be Olympic rules drug testing, which includes blood tests. Professional boxing drug tests only require urine tests.
Jim quoted Bob Arum, "I've been saying this for years. Mayweather's a psychological coward. He doesn't want to fight anybody who has a chance of beating him..." Jim commented, "Arum's lost nothing. He can still talk junk with the best of them....Boxing needs this fight."
Gilbert Arenas
Jim started, "Can you handle one mort Gilbert Arenas burn?...David Stern's not happy with Gil...Now Gilbert is looking at an indefinate suspension without pay, and quote, 'perhaps worse'...Gil, you've got a huge problem..."
Caller
Trapper in Dana Point called. He said a few sentences, then cleared his throat with a strange noise. He gave his prediction for the BCS game and commented on the Pacquiao/Mayweather situation. He made the noise a 2nd time while talking about Gilbert Arenas.
E Mails
"Hey comrade Trapper, take that kazoo out of your mouth when clearing your throat, clown." Burt in Chicago
Jim said, "Kazoo? Does this sound like a kazoo?" He then played the tape of the sound and said, "...a little bit, I guess...sort of...no, no it doesn't."
"Hey Jim. Was Trapper riding a horse when he made that last call, or do made men naturally 'mmeeeahhh' before they start a rant?"
(The sound was replayed approximately 15 times in the segment with 2 of them mixed with the famous "Giddyup horseface" tape.)
Interview
Andy Staples (SI.com)
Andy covers college football. He said Alabama isn't a shoe in to win tonight. He mentioned some strong points for Texas. He also said he feels Texas will be able to protect Colt McCoy because Alabama's D line won't be as physically dominant as Nebraska's was. In the end, however, he did predict Alabama would win. They also talked about Urban Meyer and the stress of college football coaching.
Josh Cribbs
The best player on the Browns is not happy with the offer to renegotiate his contract. The Browns are offering to raise his pay to 1.4 million per year. He does have 3 more years on his contract. Jim said, "They don't have to do anything, but they should. It's wrong not to take care of the guy."
"Off the Board"
Jim commented on a recent episode of the TV show "Wheel of Fortune". Military members were the contestants on the show. They had difficulty pronouncing "Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa". Jim didn't think it was necessary to demand perfect pronunciation from our military members. "Why don't you put the word 'Freedom' in a puzzle...," he said.
Caller
Eddie in Boise called. Again! He kept a train of thought but 'ran out of time'. The music came on and Jim said he was out of time. He then went on for about 9 more minutes before going to commercial!
Interview
Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils)
He is a goalie for the team. They have the best record in the East. Martin has been on the Canadian Olympic Hockey team and Jim brought up the Olympics. Marty said he knows there are a lot of talented young players and he didn't take for granted that he would be on the team.

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
College Football
Orange Bowl
Georgia Tech's "song" this year was "All the Way Turnt Up".
Jim said, "Safe to assume they were not bumping this rockin' tune in the clubs in South Beach last night. (The song was played in the backround over and over with periodic 'Uh Oh's!' by Carl Lewis thrown in as Jim continued his take.) "...Not after Iowa locked up Georgia Tech and its vaunted triple option...all the way rolled up. all the way knocked out...That Iowa D was tapping Tech out...All the way jacked up. Uh oh!"
BCS Championship Game
Rome: "For me personally, Texas is and enormous Jungle team, but it's awfully hard to go against Alabama."
Randy Johnson
"The Unit" retires.
Rome: "Randy Johnson, one of my favorite MLBers ever..."
Some of Jim's favorite Randy Johnson memories:
-The greasy mullet. Jim said, "He was a mullet pioneer."
-Jim, "How about his greatest achievement ever...eviscerating...obliterating that pigeon in spring training back in '01, and then, true to form, refusing to even acknowledge it happened...to this day, the most amazing thing I've ever seen in a baseball game...any game ,any level, anywhere
-The Rex Hudler story where Randy told Rex, "Swing the bat, puss."
-The deodorant commercial with Kyle Brandt.
-The incident with photographers on the street in New York. Rome: "My favorite part of that was when he told that photog, 'Don't get in my face."...and then admonished him, 'Don't talk back to me' like he was his son. A grown man telling another grown man not to talk back to him."
Video of my parody of Randy Johnson's encounter with the Photog
Gilbert Arenas
Jim said today, "Gil. I know you think everything is a joke. This is not. You're playing this all wrong, Gil...Be smart about this. You're not. Stop making jokes about gun play."
New "Sport"
Extreme Arm Wrestling
Rome: "It's when guys lock up like they're going to arm wrestle, but they don't try and slam each others fist to the table. They just lock up. They hold on and then they start to pound the crap out of each other...with their free arm...Just haymakers..."
Bluetooth Guy
An E mail mentioning the passage of a hands free law in Oregon led to a war between "Bluetooth Guy" and "Non-Bluetooth Guy" in E mails and texts. Jim's take, "Those things are purely function. It's a form of function. It's not part of your look. If it's a part of your look, you're a tool...Bottom line, it's the calling card of the tool."
Interviews
Chris Peterson (Boise State Football Coach)
He thinks the win over TCU heoped continue to accelerate the Boise State program. Asked if he thinks they deserve a part of the National Championship, Chris said, "No. I don't think so." He went on to acknowledge the system and the BCS Championship game that takes place January 8th. Chris also said he trusts the system. We found out that a red shirt freshman had the responsibility to call or call off their fake punt play.
Tony Dungy (NBC, Former NFL coach)
Jim asked him how his year has gone and if he missed coaching. Tony said, "You know, Jim, I really haven't missed it...I was telling my wife how fast it's gone...I am really enjoying Football Night in America..." He then said he did miss the players and coaches and interacting with them daily.
Of the Colts' decision not to chase perfection, Tony said, "Well, I think the decision itself was not that big of a deal."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Jim started with...
College Football
Rome: "Boise State did it again. Boise State did what Boise State does. They show up on a big stage in a tight game and they do something incredibly brass to rip somebody's heart out. They did it to Oklahoma in '07 in the Fiesta Bowl and they did it to 4th ranked TCU last night...How did TCU not see that fake punt coming?...That wasn't a good play. That was a great play. That wasn't a good call. That was an amazing call. Fourth and nine from their own 33...unbelievable."
Jim also gave Boise State fans credit for their intensity. He said, "They're part pep rally, part freak show..."
Finally, Jim talked about Boise St. having a chance at the BCS title game next year because they will be ranked higher at the start of next season.
NBA
Gilbert Arenas
Rome: "Gil. Where were you when Plaxico Burris blew a hole in his leg, costing himself millions of dollars, his freedom, and maybe any shot he had at returning to the NFL. How was that not a wake up call to athletes and their guns? Look, I don't have a problem with you owning a gun. If you think that your wealth and your celebrity make you a target...But if you're going to do it, learn the gun laws in your state and the rules of your employer. Not doing so is stupid, and it's reckless."
The story of Gilbert Arenas and the gun incident in the Wizards locker room spawned a reset of Jim Browns take on athletes and guns as well as a lot of
E-mails.
J. Stew
Call screener and guest "booker" Jason Stewart was "white...pale as a ghost" because an athlete that was to be interviewed hadn't called yet. Jim added, "J. Stew has morphed into J. Stress." (A Cablinasian the friendly ghost reset also took place.)
Interviews
Miles Austin (Dallas Cowboys)
Miles is in his 4th year, having a breakout year, and is headed to the Pro Bowl. He is a former undrafted free agent. Jim asked if Miles felt things would work out for him as they did. Miles said he is not completely surprised by his success, but, "I wasn't expecting the whole Pro Bowl thing. That was a little...a shock to me." Jim asked about his first 3 years when he didn't get the opportunity to play. Miles said he had to keep his focus and try to get better. Miles said after the Cowboys first 2 December losses they banded together and it showed how resilient the guys on the team are.
Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens)
Jim had been raving about Willis' stiff arm of the Raiders' Hiram Eugene. Jim asked Willis about whether it was a stiff arm or a swat. Willis said, "I say it was a stiff arm. Other people call it a slap upside the head. " Jim then asked if a good stiff arm is better than "trucking" a guy. Willis said, "Yeah, it really is, because it gives you more confidence...and just lets people know...If you run up on me, you better run up correct."
Jared Allen (Minnesota Vikings)
The Vikings have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Jim asked Jared how he is going to spend this week. Jared said he would probably spend it indoors since it was "negative a million" out here in Minnesota. Jared likes the bye week in the playoffs, saying it gives him a chance to get rested up from nicks and bruises. Also, Jared thought it was good to have a big win (over the Giants) before the playoffs. He did admit that "shutting people up" was a good part of their win.
Jared's interview brought up "Wiki lies"- things that aren't true that are put on peoples Wikipedia page.
Kyle Brandt
Kyle came on air and shared some of the illegitimate acting credits put on his Wikipedia page. They included: "Six Pack Abs, A Day in the Life of Lyle Grant" and "Wasted in Wrigley".
Text Contest Selections
"Unwar me still writing every date as 2009."
"Hey Romulus Prime. Guns don't kill people. Athletes uneducated on gun safety, carrying guns, kill people. Signed the late, great Chuck Heston."
"Hey Jim. Is it possible that Tiger is the Bill Gates of golf? A huge nerd that has worked himself into the cool kids club. Now it's chicks, pecks, and dollar bills."
Triple U Sponsor: "News networks airing footage of morbidly obese people from the neck down."
Actual Triple U (2): "Hey Rome Skillet. Alabama does not have many holes in their fooball team. Too bad the same can't be said of their grills." (Jim said, "That's triple U.")
"Hey Rome. We know what Gil Arenas is talking about. We can't trust our families around any of my belongings. So, we just take everything with us everywhere we go. Regards, bums. War more bum smack in 2010."
Result: "You're BLOCKED! One of the worst 'wars' ever."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
The Jim Rome Show in 2010 started with, "What is up? A tremendous 2010 to you...It's great to be back."
Today's topics:
NFL
Denver Broncos
Jim began with, "Denver is a big time Jungle team. Love the Broncos...but I'm going to have to start here. Gotta smack your own...That choke job last year was one of the worst choke jobs ever...Bad enough that it cost Mike Shanahan his job. This years meltdown is even worse...I didn't think you could pull off a bigger choke than blowing a 3 game lead with 3 games to play...but, this year's meltdown IS even worse. They started 6-0. They still missed the playoffs...They lost 8 of their last 10. This meltdown is catastrophic..."
"Rest or play" discussion
Rome: "Do you rest guys or do you play guys? Have they earned the rest or are you jerking with a teams rhythm and momentum? What about Wes Welker? Wes Welker shredding his knee is a kill shot to the Patriots' title hopes." Later Jim addressed the issue again, "...I can see where the Colts and others are paranoid about getting guys hurt in games that might be meaningless." Jim also recognized the fans paying regular season prices to see what amounts to a preseason game when key players are rested.
"Black Monday"
The day when traditionally some NFL coaches are let go. Today's firings: Jim Zorn of the Redskins and the entire coaching staff of the Buffalo Bills.
E Mails
1st E mail of the year:
"Dear Jim. I know what a new year means. It means that you get another two months of vacation." Jake in the Nati.
2nd:
"Van Smack. Van Smack in the box. The pimp is back. Oh my goodness, goodness gracious. Of all the dramatic things. Of all the dramatic things I've ever seen. Van Smack standing in the box announcing he is back. There's a big grin on Marty's face. Well, there you go. We don't have to worry about that spot in the box anymore." Signed Ugly Bob in 96 South Carolina.
Caller
Patrick in Chicago called and began talking about Urban Meyer. He then inserted Brian Kelly, the new Notre Dame coach, into his take.
Jim responded, "I'm listening Patrick. And you're old school...I don't really understand what Brian Kelly and Cincinnati have to do with Urban Meyer taking a leave of absence. I don't really follow that logic."
E mailers then compared Patrick in Chicago's logic to Dan in Edmonton's. He was the guy that called and suggested Tiger Woods staged the November incident to get out of his life and move to Europe.
Mike Leach
Rome: "...They were looking for a reason to get rid of him and they did. He gave it to them. Otherwise, they would've either covered it up or cleaned it up. That's not to say that he didn't-not get what he deserved. Because I think he did."
Interviews
Nick Barnett (Green Bay Packers)
Jim asked if teams really start the playoffs 0-0 or if there would be carry over from Green Bay just smacking the Arizona Cardinals. Nick said he didn't know, but would say that it's always good to go into the playoffs with momentum. Nick admitted that some players don't want to play in "meaningless" games. Nick doesn't feel that way, though. He said you never know when you won't be able to play anymore so he plays every opportunity he gets. Jim emphasized That Nick is a guy that knows injury, having suffered a knee injury last year.
Dhani Jones (Cincinnati Bengals)
Jim asked him about his experience since becoming a Bengal. Dhani said, "It's been a growth...growth experience, coming up from so many different organizations...They really embraced me. It's been an amazing experience." He is new at the middle linebacker position and he likes it. It requires more responsibility and helps him to focus.
Dhani is the guy that wanted to create the "Bow Tie Revolution". Jim first said if Dhani sent a bow tie to him, he would wear it on ESPN. He then backtracked, saying he couldn't "pull it off".
Text Contest
"Hey Rome, unwar people that don't give you a gift receipt, but the actual receipt so they can show you how much scrilla they dropped on you." Emilio Textavez
"Hey Rome. Why don't you tell those Packer fans to give Rodgers some 'bleeping' credit. Regards, Phil Jackson."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Jim is on vacation.
Tony Rizzo guest hosted today. He has a talk show in Cleveland, Ohio. He guest hosted the Jungle earlier this year.
Right off the top Tony asked for a "Quad Yeah!" and got it! He reminded us that he is well versed in Jungle etiquette. He said he would be putting Alvin to the test today, and quickly reference "put me in the ground" (the famous Tanya Harding 911 call clip) to see if Alvin could quickly play the clip. Alvin did!
Many show "drops" were played throughout the show.
College Bowl Games
Tony said he is a "geek" that watches all the bowl games. He and his sidekick, Aaron, debated the relevance of many of the bowl games. Tony also called for Alabama and Texas fans to call about the BCS Championship Game.
Mike Leach
News broke during the show that Texas Tech had fired football coach Mike Leach. Tony said, "...Look, I don't know what happened...I find it hard to believe htat Mike would go to the...locking kids up...What on Earth is going on?...I think there's stuff we're not hearing about this...something serious happened, though...They already had it in for him there in that place."
NFL
Tony and Aaron discussed and argued about the playoffs and playoff scenarios.
E Mail
Tony was resetting the fact that he has been testing Alvin. He then said, "I'm trying to keep him on his toes...with the drops...I've done nothing compared to what Ugly Bob has in store for you, Alvin. Please pay attention." He then read the E mail with Alvin dropping the sound clips in successfully along the way:
"Subba dubba dong, Tell Alvin that he better "have my donuts" ready and put some "hot sauce in my bag" or else I'm going to put him "in the ground" and it will be so harsh "Yakety Sax" won't be able to cheer him up. Even "Vannnn Smaaaack" tripping on a "malted hops frenzy" won't do the trick. Alvin will only be able to say "UH OH!" and I won't give him a chance to "make up for it" after he limps off rambling like "Miss Teen South Carolina" reacting to a call from "Carl in Rosemead". "Now I'm done."
Ugly Bob in 96 South Carolina
"War Gimmie back my son" you "stupid idiot".
Tony said he wanted to try a quad buzzer before the end of the show.
Interviews
Travis Pastrana
He has been an X Games motocross winner. He came on to talk about the "Red Bull New Years Eve Extravaganza". On that show, he will attempt to jump a car from a pier to a barge in Long Beach, California. He said his main concern going in is wind direction and strength, saying even a slight head wind will force him to alter the cars speed. Tony asked him what his parents thought of this "daredevil" stuff. Travis said his parents got him started! He said his mom once broke her neck trying a back flip on a bike!
Bernie Kosar (Former College and NFL QB)
He was in studio with Tony in Cleveland. He came on to talk about "The U".(The University of Miami) Bernie said, "We have to win a National Championship this decade to go back to "The U". Tony watched a recent documentary about the University of Miami football program in 80s and 90s. Tony asked Bernie how he ended up in Miami. Bernie said coach Howard Schnellenberger got his QB's from out of state usually. Bernie gave coach Schnellenberger a lot of credit for rallying the community (which was often fractured) around the Miami football team.
Quad Buzzer
Tony wanted a quad buzzer: Jim's original buzzer, Jim's manual buzzer, Tony's buzzer, and Tony's manual buzzer. (Tony didn't know there already was a "Quad Buzzer" made up of Jim's original buzzer, Jim's manual buzzer, Rachel in Houston's manual buzzer, and Greg in Sun Valley's portable buzzer.
When Tony heard it he asked about the 3rd buzzer, Rachel's. He said, "Dude that is not Rachel in Houston." Aaron said, "What kind of a noise is that? Does your mouth make that noise?" Tony replied, "That is gutteral. That comes from way down deep." Aaron, "That's the sound they play in hell..."
Tony, "I get a sports hernia trying to do that." (They were replaying the sound throughout.)

Daves take: "How big was that game last night for Jay Cutler?...Two weeks ago, heck even two days ago, their fans were ready to roast and ride his big butt out of town. The guy throws the game winning touchdown pass...How big is that game going to be, potentially, over the offseason?...There's nothing the Bears would've liked to see more than Jay Cutler do what he did last night."
Dave also decried the "end of the year/season's over" attitude of some people.
Vikings
Dave asked Viking fans, "What is going on with your football team?...Minnisota has lost 3 out of 4 games and they're starting to show some cracks....This entire NFC is wide open."
Colts Revisited
Dave said the call to take Peyton Manning out of the game against the Jets came not from coach Jim Caldwell but from "the top". Dave said, "I think Bill Polian (Colts President) blew it...He absollutely dropped the ball...I think you have an obligation to honor the history of the game when you have a chance to go for perfection...I think the Colt franchise let down the entire nation by that decision...Indianopolis going for 19-0 would've transcended the sports world."
Mike Leach
The Texas Tech football coach is accused of locking player Adam James is a closet and making him stand up straight for three hours.
Daves take: "Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable...If this story is true...then Mike Leach has gotta go. He's gotta be fired...I'd ban his ass from college football. You know why? Because if he did this he's crazy. That's why."
(A caller later said that Mike Leach put Adam James in a dark room to rest after a head injury. Dave Mahler wasn't sure about that.)
Mike Holmgren
He is now the team president of the Cleveland Browns. Dave had Mike on his show in Seattle regularly in the past. Dave feels Mike will turn the Browns around and he guessed that Mike will give coach Eric Mangini another year as coach.
Interview
Lorenzo Romar (Washington Huskies Basketball)
The Huskies are 9-2 in their non-conference schedule. Lorenzo feels they've been inconsistent and thinks there are areas they can improve in. They later talked about the Huskies learning to play with out there former star John Brockman. Lorenzo brought up Quincy Pondexter, saying Quincy has stepped to be a senior leader for them. Dave expressed that he feels the Washington basketball program has made a 180 degree turnaround for the better since Lorenzo has been the coach.

Jim Rome Clone Report
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Jim is on vacation.
Grant Napear guest hosted the show today. Grant is the TV voice for Sacramento Kings basketball. He did talk some NBA today, but the show was heavy on football today.
NFL
Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts lost to the Jets! Up by only 5 in the 3rd quarter, coach Jim Caldwell pulled out Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne.
Grant's take: "...They better win 2 more games, when it counts in January...because they better be to the Super Bowl...Because if they don't go the Super Bowl, Jim Caldwell's going to have a very rough off season."
Grant also read comments by Reggie Wayne about it being Jim Caldwell's decision and nobody saying "anything to him".
Grant was clearly in disagreement with the decision to take Manning and Wayne out. He asked, "When was the last time Peyton Manning got hurt?"
Interviews
Phil Sims (CBS Sports)
Phil said when he played he had never been the position of having a game that didn't affect his playoff position. He commented that the Colts had acted similarly in the past. He spoke of it being "an organizational decision". Grant asked if Phil thought there would be any carry over from this game to the playoffs. Phil felt there would "definately not" be a carry over. Grant also asked about why many teams have been inconsistent this year. Phil said coaching is so solid in the league that it is hard to dominate.
Jon Barry (NBA on ESPN)
Grant brought up Cleveland beating the Lakers handily on Christmas Day. Jon said, "Shaquille O'Neal has not been the difference. I think this team has played better the less Shaquille O'Neal has played." Jon also said he feels it is too early to tell how the playoffs will go.
Of Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets, Jon said, "...They don't want Tracy McGrady around...They feel like they're just moving on."
Andy Staples (CNNsi)
He came on to talk about the Urban Meyer situation in Florida. Meyer had resigned due health issues, then changed his mind and said he would just go on a leave of absence. Grant asked how things would be different, healthwise, when Meyer comes back. Andy said he asked the same question in his column. They spoke of how Urban Meyer has driven himself very hard his whole career. Andy brought up that other coaches would use the situation when recruiting players that Florida is also recruiting.
Commentary
I realized I was still listening the the "Jungle" when Grant brought up Alvin Delloro and his fantasy football league. Grant said Alvin was dominating his league until...he replaced Donovan McNabb with Alex Smith!
E Mail
Ugly Bob chimed in, "Dude. I wish I was playing Alvin for my fantasy league championship, with decisions like starting Alex Smith over Donovan McNabb, beating him would be like taking candy away from a baby. War Alvin's wife checking under the bed and in the closet for monsters when she tucks him in at night."
Caller
Michael in Pittsburgh called and said "Big Ben" Roethlisberger is the greatest quarterback in the NFL right now and the Steelers are the greatest franchise in the history of sports.

"Alvin, bro. Alex Smith? Who the hell would you put on the mound in a fantasy baseball championship? Dontrelle Willis?" Emilio Textavez
"Tell Alvin he's welcome in our league. If you don't spot the sucker in the first 20 minutes, you are the sucker."
"Alvin...UH OH! Gotta stick with the horses that got you there. You went from a FF champ to a FF chump. Better luck next year."
"Alex Smith? Seriously? You suck. Isaiah Thomas thinks you make bad decisions."
"Alex Smith? Child, please."
