Jim's night

He, too, believes Larry Fitzgerald "does it the right way".

Kyle's phone

Kyle Brandt lost his phone! He says it was stolen. Jim was cracking on him about it.

Interview

Sam Bradford (NFL prospect, Heisman winner)
Jim asked Sam what he thought about Kyle and his phone. Sam said, "...I think it's definately his fault...That might be like me losing my playbook game week." (Jim had a laugh at that.) The "Boomer...Sooner" topic came up. Sam had some laughs about that too.

Raja Bell (Golden State Warriors)
He is hoping to return to play from an injury by the end of March. He realizes he may be traded at the trade deadline. Raja said he is open to both staying and moving (to a contender). Of Lebron James, Raja said he thinks LeBron will, and should, stay in Cleveland.

Again, Super Bowl week makes for a different type of show - heavy on interviews and football.

Opening

Jim said, "...so nothing's happening." He then reset a Super Bowl 33 story of Ray Buchanan hitting Shannon Sharpe with a "Mr. Ed" blast.  Jim went on, "...That's what we need befor a Super Bowl...It hasn't happened yet and it's not going to happen." Jim said the best we are going to get this week in the way of controversy was Peyton Manning mistakenly referring to Darren Sharper as his brother Jaime Sharper.

Interviews

Ross Tucker (Sports Illustrated)

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

Being on the road, on the "mother of all roadies," Jim asked for a "Quad Yeah!"

Jim Rome is in Florida for the week, broadcasting live from the Super Bowl's "Radio Row."  He told us it was raining heavily! Pictures and videos of their location were put up on Jim's Facebook page. Kyle Brandt made the trip with Jim. Also joining Jim today is Richard Machowicz, Jim's friend and former Navy Seal known on the show for telling Jim to take cold showers to "cut a toughness groove in your brain."

Today's show and the entire week is interview heavy.
(With the large number of interviews, sumaries will be condensed on this blog this week.)

Super Bowl

Jim began, "First major developing story...Dwight Freeney may have a torn ligament in his ankle." He went on to tell us that the Colts are denying that report. Jim , "...It may or may not be torn, but it's clearly jacked up...That's a brutal development for the Colts...Ankle sprain, ankle tear...either way, 93 isn't coming off the blind side with the same sort of ruckus..."

Text

"Dear Rome Depot, We would personally like to welcome you to Miami. Yours, blow, hookers, salsa music, leisure suits, drug cartels, and old people." Matt
(Jim said he didn't see any of these, except a few old people, since he's been there.)

Interviews

Don Banks (CNNsi)
He talked about Dwight Freeney and his injury. Don said it didn't look good for him to play. He thinks it will have a significant impact on the game.
Don gave some thoughts on the Pro Bowl also.

Rocky Blier (NFL legend) and General Richard Thomas
Jim asked of Rocky's story in Vietnam. Rocky's foot was severely injured by a grenade in the Vietnam War, yet he was able to return and play in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rocky and General Thomas also talked about today's veterans, post traumatic stress syndrome, and help for veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mike Silver (Yahoo sports)
Mike started by talking about Kurt Warner and his retirement announcement. Jim asked if Kurt may return as Brett Favre did. Mike thinks Kurt is really done. Mike also told an old story about former Cowboys coach Barry Switzer.

Takes

Grammy Awards
Jim brought up last night's Grammy Awards and did his bit of inserting Billy Sims famous "Boomer" yell (From the Heisman ceremony in '08) into winners' announcements.

Rex Ryan
The Jets coach was in Miami and attended an MMA card. He was interviewed and heckled. He told the crowd the Jets would beat the Dolphin twice next year. Ryan was photographed giving someone the middle finger at the event.

More Interviews

Phil Simms (CBS Sports)
Phil's main take was on Tim Tebow and his Senior Bowl performance and his NFL hopes. Phil thought it was a mistake for Tebow to even play in the Senior Bowl. He said Tebow has missed out on 4 years of playing in a pro style offense and taking the ball from under center.  Tebow did not have a good performance. Simms felt the game hurt Tebow's chances to be taken in the draft as a quarterback.

Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars)
The Jaguar RB made was excited to have played in the Pro Bowl this year.
Maurice brought up how Rome has "been there" since before he was drafted. Ask about players he looked at growing up, MJD said he liked the toughness of Jack Tatum. He said he liked to hit hard like Tatum when he (MJD) played defense in high school.

Kyle's Question

Kyle had been on air a few minutes when he posed a question to Richard Machowicz. He asked him what his "move" would be if he (Kyle) "came over the table" at him. Jim told Kyle, "You're going down the wrong street, my friend." Richard said a little later, "I don't fight. I just end threats."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

"What it do, clones?...," and so Jim opened the show.

Jim Rome Facebook update: 43,000+ fans. "...so clones. Big ups to you," Jim said.

NBA

Orlando beats Boston
Rome: "...Good match up last night ...a last second loss on the road to the best team or one of the best teams in the East is no reason for Boston to panic. Look, it's January...but it does serve as a reminder. The Celtics are not that young. They're not that quick...They're not terribly athletic..."
Jim mentioned Dwight Howard's errant pass during the game, then said coach Stan Van Gundy could not have been happy. (He then played the clip of Dwight imitating Stan.) Rome also commented on KG and his leg. Jim said KG
can't pump his chest or yell "Michael Foxtrot" to help get over an injury. "...ligaments do not respond to adrenaline and enthusiasm...," Jim said.

NBA All Star game
Jim said simply that Chauncy Billups should be in the All Star Game.

NFL

Donovan McNabb
Jim said the big question in Philly is whether or not Donovan is coming or going. Jim answered, "Come to find out, he is (staying). That's not speculation. That is 100% fact...How do I know?...A psychic told him! Donovan has a psychic and he says that psychic told him there are good things ahead in Philly...What a shock that a psychic went with something as specific as 'Good things are going to happen to you'..."

Fran Tarkenton
Rome: "..Back away from Brett Favre. He's had enough, and so have the rest of us. You gotta drop the bitter, grumpy old man routine..."

Interviews

Jerry West (Hall of Famer, Northern Trust Open)
Jerry came on to talk about the Northern Trust Golf tournament. He is the Executive Director. He said his involvement is about giving back to the city of Los Angeles. The tournament benefits L.A. charities. He told Jim that Veterans get in the tournament for free. We learned that Jerry's brother was killed in Korea.
Of the Lakers, Jerry said they don't want to be without Kobe. "...If they would, they would have no chance to win," he said.

Tom Izzo (Michigan State basketball)
The Spartans are ranked 5th and are 18-3 and 8-0 in conference. Tom didn't want to get over confident about their conference record since there are still 4 teams they haven't played yet. He admitted he was "too fixated" on beating Michigan in years past when he first go the job at Michigan State. They discussed the "uproar over the school's new proposed logo" as Jim put it. Tom said it wasn't just the logo. He said they are trying to bring up their brand and get all the teams at Michigan State in the same color and type of uniform.

Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings, Team Canada)
Steve is the Executive Director of Team Canada and a Vice President of the Red Wings. He recently was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Steve talk about taking the number of New York Islander Brian Trottier because of his great play and quiet demeanor. He said he doesn't feel a greater pressure to win for country in the Olympics as opposed to winning for and organization...but he did say he found international play to be more emotional.

Caller

Alex in Sarasota called and attempted to sing his own lyrics to Eddie in Boise's song (which was sung to the tune of Barry Manilow's "Copa Cabana)
Alex got run!

E Mail

"Hey Jim. I agree. T.O. should have manned up and played the hand that he was dealt. Look at me. I played my hand and then some, but I'm doing just fine. Regards, Def Leppard's drummer." The other Francis in Glendale...

Jim said, "...whoever you are, you're BLOCKED! Francis, if that's you, you're BLOCKED bro...even if you're Francis. Francis, nice knowing you. See ya! There goes a legendary E mail career. Francis is BLOCKED! See ya! Beat it! Nice knowing you, Francis. Beat it! That was a huge BLOCK. That was a huge Jungle BLOCK right there...Wow, Francis. Now we're gonna find out who needs who more, you or the show. Bad, bad break."

Text Contest Selections

"Rome, unwar the dude who was next to me running on a treadmill with his shirt off at the gym, but war that guy immediately falling off the treadmill as he told me about the marathon he's training for." Pat in the 'Nati

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

Jim Rome's Facebook update: Almost 40,000 fans at the start of today's show.

NFL

Brett Favre

Rome: "I would imagine right about now the 'Ol Gunslinger is having a pretty painfull week...after wearing the Saints all day long on Sunday."
Jim dismissed Favre and Viking fan conspiracy theories that there was a bounty on Favre's head...and his knees. Jim said there's a bounty on every quarterback on every weekend, on every game, spoken or unspoken. "That's no news flash," he said.

Kurt Warner

Jim commented, "...It's hard to imagine him not retiring tomorrow. I don't see how he pulls together his family and his friends to make an announcement that he's coming back."

NBA

Gilbert Arenas' punishment

He was suspended for the remainder of the season. Jim asked if the punishment fit the crime. Then added, "...I'd say it does. I'd say, not only does it fit the crime for Gil...He's lucky it's not worse."

Caller

Ken in Sacramento called out Paul Shirley. The former NBAer, now a writer, made insensitive remarks regarding the people of Haiti.

Interview

Bob Huggins (West Virginia Basketball)
Jim asked Bob how he was and Bob responded, "I'm wonderful Romey. I thought you forgot about me." It had been a while since the former Cincinnati Bearcat's coach was on the show. He is now at his alma mater, West Virginia. Bob feels like they have done a lot there so far. Asked if this year's group has a Final Four feel to it, Bob said he didn't know. He talked about having very good teams in the past that got stopped short due to injuries.

E mail

"Dear Jim, Did you see the Nets fans on their feet at the end of the game last night? That seemed a little excessive to me. Signed the countless rounds of applause given at the State of the Union last night." Myron in Madison

Jim acknowledged that he President gets a lot of applause during such speeches. He said, "...It's gotta make you feel pretty good, right?" Jim went on to say that he doesn't get that feedback...He just speads into a microphone. "I'm not a stand up comedian...I don't get that constant feedback.."
Jim then went on a rant about Terrell Owens with an applause sound effect going off periodically. As it went on, Mark Madsen's 'YEAH' was added to the applause...then Howard Dean's and Joe Namath's. Finally, Kyle Brandt's 'VAAANNN SMAAAAACK! was added as well. It was a funny bit with Jim in "speech" mode.

Interviews

Ben Wallace (Detroit Pistons)
He first talked a lot about the teams injuries contributing to their struggles. Ben himself says he is feeling good for the first time in a few years. He talked about being able to move around better. Ben is back to lifting weights before AND after games.  He is glad to be back in Detroit. Jim did bring up the possibility of teammate Rip Hamilton getting moved before the trade deadline. Ben doesn't want that to happen but said, "..Nothing really certain in this league."

George Karl (Denver Nuggets coach)
George told Jim, "Your producer calls you Thee Jim Rome."
Jim brought up the trade deadline. George said it may be difficult for them to make a move with the luxury tax implications. He did say the Nuggets have gotten refocused in the last 6 weeks..."We've had a good January," he said. They talked about George's son who is in the NBADL and is doing quite well there.

Caller

Yours truly, your blogger, Greg in Sun Valley called the show today.
Some Facebook reaction:
Michael Luchies,"Good call by Greg in Sun Valley...too bad you got cut off."(time)
Donna,"That guy just talking in a monotone was sooo annoying!!!"
(Was she talking about me or Bob Huggins?)

Facebook

I just joined Facebook on Monday when Jim Rome announced he did. I have found it a great way to communicate with other fans of the show. Already, I have become "friends" with Chad in Portland, Michael Luchies (Jungle Smack blogger), Anne Marie(She was at the C-Town station appearance by Jim and got on air with him in studio that day), and Steve in H-Town (Stucknut.com owner).

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

In his introduction, Jim brought up his new Facebook page - 30,000+ fans at the start of the show.

College Basketball

South Carolina upsets top ranked Kentucky.
Jim said he didn't know it would happen but said he was not surprised at all. It was Kentucky's first loss. Jim went on, "...I'm guessing John Calipari isn't unhappy about this one. Now, at least, Calipari has their attention. Now his warnings and his admonishments are not going to go in one ear and out the other. Now, when he tells them to listen to him, instead of everybody else who's telling them how great they are, they will."

NBA

Greg Oden
Rome: "...Now if you want to talk about this responsibly...I know you clones. I know what you do with stories like this...nothing good...Yesterday may have been a good day for the low lifes who like to foward E mails with 'NSFW' in the subject: Not Safe For Work...but it was a very bad day for Portland big man, Greg Oden...Maybe not his worst day but certainly his most embarrassing day...Embarrassing because nude shots of him started bouncing all over the internet. Oden owned it. He apologized for it, and he said that he sent the pictures to a lady friend about a year and a half ago. ..UH OH! (The Carl Lewis sound clip was played...repeatedly.)
Jim went on, "...There is no way somebody is sitting on a Greg Oden nude shot and not showing it to someone...especially after the relationship goes sideways...And really, how could it not if you're sending each other shots like that? ...If such a picture exists, it's going viral...it's not a question of if, it's a matter of when..."

Interview

Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers)
Jim first asked Kobe about the Lakers trip to the White House and if it gave the team a shot of adrenaline. "No question...," Kobe replied, in part. He called it an opportunity to remind them of what it takes to win a title and what an accomplishment it is. Jim then asked Kobe if he, personally, needs a way to refocus...or if he is always on. Kobe said, "Nah, I'm pretty dialed."
We learned in the interview that Kobe and his family got to go back the next day and spend time with the President personally. Kobe said it was great and the President and Vice President were very gracious. Also, Kobe said President Obama mentioned over the summer that he wanted to have "like a pick up basketball game at the White House."

Caller

Jim told us that "Eddie in Boise" was on hold. He decided to run a poll on the Jim Rome Facebook page on whether or not he should take Eddie's call.

Other topics

-A triple U early in the show about "grown men taking baths" got a lot of run from Jim.

-JR Smith of the Denver Nuggets is going to get "served"...really...with legal papers. Lawyer Rust Hardin had done work for JR and hasn't been paid yet...allegedly.

-Athletes improving their game by playing video games

Caller

After nearly 2,000 votes on Facebook, most in favor of taking "Eddie in Boise's" call, Jim went to Boise. Much like Vinny Mac's recent call, Eddie did not play to his strengths or....tendencies. Eddie acknowledged the Facebook poll but then tried to go mainstream or "normal" caller. It wasn't a trainwreck like people hoped for. It was just dull. He got run! Jim was not happy.

Facebook comments

Jim read some comments from Facebook about the picture he posted of J. Stew and his office wall.
"Stu needs to mix in some Rogaine."
"Looks like Stu hasn't missed any meals in a while." Ryan Snow
"Holy moley. Nice boiler Stu. Your couch is not a treadmill."

Text Contest Selections

"Unwar the fist bump grenade blast. Worst handshake ever. Losers!" Mike in Harrisburg

"Hey Rome. Triple U: Guy who runs a stud finder over his chest and yells, 'beep, beep, beep...found one right here..." Brian in Ann Arbor

"Hey Jim. We hate baths also. Signed, those trust fund hippies at UCSB."

Triple U sponsor: "The waiter who sits down at you table when taking your order." Textlef Schremp

Actual Triple U: No triple u read today.

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

Jim began, "Let's start with some football. Not the Super Bowl, but the Senior Bowl. The Senior Bowl is starting to feel like the Super Bowl. Message boards are buzzing. Flash bulbs are popping. The game is sold out when they had trouble giving away duckets in recent years. And the reason for all that...one Timothy Richard Tebow."
Rome told us about the fans enthusiasm, but said not all NFL people there showed that same enthusiasm. Apparently Tebow, who used the "shotgun" at Florida, had trouble holding onto the ball on snaps from under center. The "Is Tim Tebow an NFL quarterback?" discussion followed.
Rome: "...corn fed handsomeness...it's not going to fix faulty mechanics or help you read defenses...Great guy, great attitude, great leader...but taken altogether, that does not mean he's going to be a great NFL quarterback..."

NBA

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Miami Heat

Lebron James vs Dwayne Wade
Rome: "..."the King" crashed "Flash's" house...and the two delivered...They were into each other. Dwayne Wade is one of the few guys who still has the sand to try to go up and get one of Lebron's dunks...It went badly for him, but you have to respect it, and I do...Never has a guy looked so good getting posterized as he did last night..."

"Self Glossing"

Jim said, "...One of the fundamental laws of the entire universe...You cannot self gloss...not on this show, not in sports, not in life. You cannot self gloss...but apparently "Big Baby" did not get that message. The Boston Celtic now wants to be called "Uno uno". (He wears number 11.)

Yellow Pages

Recent deliveries of the yellow pages in the area of Texas Tech University had former football coach Mike Leach on the cover. Jim mentioned the story but was more interested in cracking on the yellow pages even existing anymore.

Interviews

Jason Sobel (ESPN.com)
He recently wrote a column about Tiger Woods that theorizes that Tiger no longer has a passion for golf. Jason did not relate this to Wood's off the course problems. Jason said, "...he hits a wayward drive and slams his club down and sulks his way down the fairway...If there's a shutter that goes off from a nearby camera in his backswing, he throws a little temper tantrum..."
The theory considers that Tiger has been playing golf since he could walk (literally).  Jason said it is not uncommon for this to happen to athletes and others who have done something for so long. In short it can become just a job to them.

Josh Pastner (Memphis basketball)
Josh is the new head coach at Memphis. He is a former assistant of John Calipari's. Josh told the story of how he was offered the job. He had packed away all his things and was ready to go to Kentucky with John Calipari. The athletic director asked to meet with him. Josh thought he was going to be asked to stay on and assist the new coach. He was then asked to BE the new head coach! He asked for a little time to think about it. He went out and called John Calipari and told him the situation. John wanted Josh to take the job at Memphis so he told Josh he was fired at Kentucky. John was glad Josh got the job..

Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR)
He's the first to win 4 straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Championships. Jim asked about his historical standing amongst the greats. Jimmie said he is "in the discussion", but has to concentrate on his career which is still ongoing.
Later, they talked about payback in NASCAR. Jimmie admitted it takes place, "...Oh, totally, I mean it totally comes back...if something's deliberate and intentional...it may not come back next week...The person that did you wrong will be in a position where things are going well for them...and you have the perfect opportunity...So that stuff happens."

Text Contest Selections

"Hey Rome. War KB telling the barrista at Starbucks that he doesn't want a sleeve on his coffee cup." Rick in Calgary

"Hey Rome. I can show Tebow how to read defenses. Signed LT. Hit it Mel"
                 Anthony in the 407

"Hey Jim. You're right. Self glossing is in bad taste. Signed Turbo and Laser, Brandts guns." Mike in Madison

Triple U sponsor: "The guy driving a Lumina with a "Talk is cheap, let's race" bumper sticker." Dave in Green Bay

Actual Triple U: "Hey Rome. Did I hear you say that winning is a great deodorant? OK. That explains a lot. Thanks man, Detroit."

Result: "John in San Diego is pretty happy with himself. You earned that warning."
