Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from Today's Show

NBA Finals

Rome began with the Lakers' win in Game 3. Dereck Fisher finished the game on a tear for Los Angeles. Rome commented on how Fisher is the guy that has picked Kobe Bryant up time and again. "This cat is a straight up warrior...He single handedly saved that game....He has never come up as big as he did last night," Jim expounded. There was a moment in Fisher's post game interview that he got emotional. Rome said he is the guy that is on record saying that there's no crying at work. "I'm making an exception for Derek Fisher...That was an amazing moment," remarked Jim.

E mails on the game:
   "Dear Ray Allen,
Tell me how my @%# tastes. Signed, the hoop." Bryan in Syracuse.

Vic in NoCal weighed in. I paraphrase his E mail: "Dear Ray Allen, 0 for 13? What a freaking joke. Signed, Terrance in Sierra Madre. War my .333 career Smack Off percentage...I'm the Tony Gwynn of the Smack Off."

Stephen Strasburg

The pitcher for the Nationals made his much anticipated debut against the Pirates.
Mike in Chicago, non-7 wood user, E mailed to the effect of: "...you forget it was against the Pirates. Signed 'That guy'."
Jim then acted like he was going to agree with "That guy". He then said, "Who am I kidding?...The guy was disgusting...filthy...Strasburg is revolting!...He just exceeded the hype...7 innings of pure 'freak'."

Other E mails

"Strasburg pitched his first
The Mamba hammered the Celts
Driveway grills still suck"
 - Bird in Chicago

"Bird in Chicago
Calls himself the insider
Only tools self gloss"

Josh in Madison voiced his displeasure with Vic in NoCal with, "...the only way he resembles Tony Gwynn is in pant size."

Rome said, "Vic is the classic heel....he is Brock Lesnar."

Rashad Evans

The MMAer came on after his victory over Rampage Jackson.  Jim Rome said is was a great interview, even if you're not an MMA fan. Before the interview, Jim said that his webmaster told him that nothing draws as much response, both positive and negative, than MMA.

MMA haiku:

"Rashad executes
Movie star Rampage can't hang
I pity the fool"

Caller

Israel in Los Angeles called in again. He began with high energy and cracks on Vic in NoCal. He was displeased that Vic is "defending his Smack Off crown with E mails." Israel said it was like "your girl sending you to the store to buy her tampons...." Then AAAAAHHHHH!!! - the buzzer sounded!
Jim Rome said, "Feminine hygene smack should not be a part of your phone call....That call never happened..."

Chris Pronger

Rome talked about an ad or a poster that had the hockey player in a skirt and read, "Chrissy Pronger".
Jim questioned who calls a man by a woman's name. He went on, "...and Chrissy, no less. Who does that? Who do you think you are? Me?...Trust me. That doesn't end well..."

1008lb Squat

Rome brought up a video that is making the rounds online. A guy attempted to squat 1,008 pounds. Jim set the stage. The guy had 6 spotters. "A grand," Jim said. I personally saw it the evening before. I thought an accident was going to be the story. No! As Jim put it, "...as the guy was on his way to lock out, he yacked all over the judge sitting in front of him! ...a mid lift spew."

Mike in the District E mailed twice: (paraphrased) 1. "That wouldn't have happened if he would have had a 5 Hour Energy before that lift. It has zero sugar and no calories."
2. "...Kyle being spotted by the Southern Sandwich."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from Today's Show

(Today's Report is abbreviated)

Opening

Rome started with the NBA finals. Today is game 3.

E mail

The song "Loser" began to play....an E mail from Eric in Falls Church followed.
Rome emphasized his "war". Eric warred Jim having him do the text contest one day this week.

Lane Kiffin

Rome brought up Lane Kiffin. I believe he appeared on JRIB yesterday.
Just the name "Lane Kiffin" brought in many Tennessee E mails cracking on the guy.

A caller from LA, believe it or not, took the anti-Kiffin side. He tried to make an analogy casting Jim and Holly Robinson-Peete as character in the Tennessee-Kiffin saga. The caller said that Holly said that Jim Rome was the one guy she would leave Rodney Peete for. "AAAAHHHHH!!!" The manual buzzer sounded. Jim was not happy that the caller said that, since it wasn't true. Rome played the tape.

NBA Commissioner David Stern

Jim did an interview that he said had a lot of give and take. To me, there was disagreement and a little friction. Rome asked about the officiating in Game 1 and 2. He asked if the referees would let the players, especially the stars, "play more" in Game 3. Stern asked if Jim was suggesting that they should not call a foul when they see a foul. They then disagreed a little about "star treatment".
The interview ended well when they talked baseball and the subject on Stern coming on the show when he was no longer NBA Commissioner.

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from Today's Show

NBA Finals

The show's first topic was the Finals. Rome covered it all, and it is summarized at jimrome.com.
I liked how he pointed out that Lamar Odom needs to wake up and realize the Finals have started. Rome said, "Phil needs to get in his head...or Kobe needs to go upside it!"

Funny sound byte
Phil Jackson said of Doc Rivers running on the court to call time out, "...Coaches should stay on the sidelines...It was like he was shot out of the starters blocks..." Rome added a "Hey-O!"

Early E mails

Mike in Chicago got in with a haiku about Game 2:

"Shuttlesworth sinks threes
Black mamba has foul trouble
Queensbridge didn't show"

"The Bum Smack King" got in with "War bums using hard boiled eggs as golf balls."...then got BLOCKED!

Rules of Ink

Rome laid out his "5 Rules of Ink". (He made full disclosure admitting he, himself has no tattoos.)

1. Do not get loaded before you ink.
2. Do not get inked (while) angry.
3. Do not get face ink.
4. Do not ink anything related to the person you are currently dating.
5. Do not get inked with the logo of your new football team.

This was brought up because LaDanian Tomlinson, now of the New York Jets, got ink of the Jets logo on his calf. Rome said, "I don't like that call....He also violated rule #2."

John Wooden

The iconic man and former UCLA basketball coach passed away on Friday at the age of 99.
Jim spoke of the kind of man he was and of the times he came in contact with him. He also replayed parts of an interview of the coach on the show in 2008.

Many calls were taken in tribute of John Wooden, and stories of encounters with him came out. Bryan in Tucson said he played for John Wooden from 1958 to 1961, before the years of massive success at UCLA. Other callers were: Louis in Wichita, Irae Craig, John in Cincinnati, Mike in New Orleans, Bruce in LA, Bryan in Bellingham, Adam in Raleigh, and Jon in Del Norte.

Gail Goodrich

This former UCLA player and NBA Hall of Famer came on to talk about John Wooden. He too, talk as much about John Wooden as a man as he did about John Wooden the basketball coach.
After the interview, Rome said that Gail was his first athlete idol. He repeated the story about writing to Gail as a 7 year old and getting an autographed picture from him in the mail.
This brought on stories of athlete encounters and autographs.
(Note: Gail Goodrich went to Poly High in......Sun Valley, CA!)

E Mails

"Did I ever tell you about the time I met my idol (a hall of fame basketball coach) in a locker room? Signed, the best phone call ever..." Marshall in Newport.  (This is referring to the "Larry Brown" call from Toby in Houston. Jim told us he would not play the call. He did let us know that Kyle Brandt signaled him that the clip was ready to go.)

"Dear Jim, We are still waiting for our letter from Kyle. Signed, the Southern Sandwich."

"Me send letter to Ronald McDonald....no response, so me go eat Big Mac...me just hungry...Hungrily, Kirstie." This E mailer was, of course, BLOCKED!

Whoomp There it Is

Jim brought up that there is speculation that President Obama was briefly in the video for the "Whoomp There it Is" song from way back. Jim does not believe it is the president.

Mike in Chicago E mailed: "What the hell is Barry doing in the music video for "Whoomp There It Is"?
Regards,
Syndicated Sports Talk Show Hosts in Blink-182 videos"

Sad Note

The brother of sound engineer Alvin Delloro passed away over the weekend at hte age of 38. Thoughts and prayers went out to Alvin and his family from Jim and many callers and E mailers.

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Friday Format

Today's Show

Jim covered Game 1 of the NBA Finals, which was won by the LA Lakers.  He felt guys that made a difference were Ron Artest and Pau Gasol.
A new fan submitted photo on Facebook had Jim and the XR4ti as the "A-Team". Jim broke out a sound byte of Steve Nash saying, "Alvin's incredible...(he) deserves an incredible amount of praise." He was presumably referring to his coach, Alvin Gentry. Rome played it as Nash referring to sound engineer Alvin Delloro! It was a funny bit.

My Choice for Interview of the Week

Dallas Braden
This Oakland A's pitcher, who recently threw a perfect game, came on with energy, yet was humble. He honestly told Jim that he had the count wrong in his head when he faced Gabe Kapler in that game. Also, he has that great story of getting that perfect game on Mother's Day with his grandmother, who was there for him after the death of his mother, in attendance.

My Top 5 Funniest Moments of the Week on the Show

5. -Jim's story of his uncle paying him $25 dollars to go a year without candy
     when he was a kid.

4. -When telling us about the XR4ti being cast as the A-Team in a picture,
Rome said, "J. Stew as Bad Attitude Barracas." He then added that Kyle
Brandt said, "More like Bad Breath."

3.-Today's caller, Steve in Tucson got run! What was funny was that I
knew the buzzer was about to sound! I thought it would be purely for his
pregnant pauses. Rome also didn't like Steve's "...looking forward to the
    107 degree weekend."

2.-After Jim's candy story, Lee in Vancouver E mailed "Hey Trapper. I'll give you
25 bucks not to call the Jim Rome Show for a year.  Rome then responded,
"You'd have to pay him 30 pieces of silver."

1.-Rome's response to the audience is some of his funniest stuff. After
receiving E mails about Rue McClanahan's passing, Jim said, "...I will not
    dignify your imbecilic behavior!"

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from Today's Show

Blown Call

Rome started with the blown call in the potential perfect game for Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga. Jim was impressed with Galarraga's calm response. He said, "...Never has a guy been jammed as bad as Galarraga and shown as much class...100% class...the guy was incredible." Rome also expressed that he felt umpire Jim Joyce handled it the best way he could under the circumstances. The umpire admitted he blew the call and apologized to Armando personally.

Rue McClanahan?

The actress that appeared in the Golden Girls TV show passed away at the age of 76. Jim got E mails on the subject as he often does on celebrity passings. "I don't have a Golden Girls take...this is a sports talk show," he said. He added, "Thoughts and prayers for the family...There's your take, idiot!...Do not try to work 'Thank You for Being a Friend' into an E mail. It won't be read, and you will be BLOCKED!" He ended with something to the effect of, "I will not dignify your imbecilic behavior!"

Rome's favorite thing in sports...

"Ron Ron talking about sports 'the way it used to be'..."  First there was the "table leg" story, then his take that if you take a charge, you're a punk. Today was Artest saying that the Celtics have "guys that play the way I played when I was growing up." He also talked about winning in the other guys' neighborhood and having to find a way to get out of there.
Rome added, "No blood, no foul...and somebody is liable to get 'table legged'."

E mail

"Dear Paul Pierce, We already have your wheelchair ready if you need to act ERRRR! get injured. Signed "The Mamba"    Chris in St. Pete

Caller

Dean in Detroit called and said he was at last nights game. He talked about how angry the crowd was. He felt it was close to getting ugly. He concluded by saying that Jim Joyce's contrition made all the difference in the world.

Five Years Ago Today

Today is the 5th anniversary of....the "Mr. Automatic" song debut on the show. Houston band "Three Day Weekend" wrote the now iconic song about call screener Jason Stewart. A classic line from the song was: "Holey moley, he's the next big thing..."  Rome added that "that was before mole smack was beaten into the ground."
Asked by Jim if he was sure it was today, Alvin said, "I remember...It was on my birthday." So, today is Alvin's birthday, and the requisite young age E mails came in.

Armando's Vette

During the show we found out that GM was giving Armando Galarraga a convertable Corvette for his efforts last night. "Now he's Corvette guy," Jim said. He then called for suggestions for the vanity plate Armando should get.
Some were: "IMPURFCT", "UMPFAIL", "PSSTPLS", and "UMPBH8N" by Craig in Tampa.

Text Contest Selections

"Unwar stepping on gum, not knowing, and getting it stuck on your brakes and gas pedal."

"Jimmy Bo Bimmy, the call was good for the game. They're talking about the game, signed, the BCS."

Triple U sponsor: "I'm at the ATM. When I walk away, the guy behind me says, 'Did you leave any money in there for me?'."

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from Today's Show

$50 Charges?

Rome began with the news that Laker Coach Phil Jackson is paying $50 for every charge one of his players takes. Jim joked about how much the players make and about Ron Artest not taking any charges!
Jim then told us the story of how his uncle gave him $25 to go a year without candy when he was a kid. He then said, "...not a good enough exchange...I got jammed!"

Early E mails

"Hey Trapper. I'll give you 25 bucks not to call the Jim Rome Show for a year." Lee in Vancouver
(Jim responded, "You'd have to pay him 30 pieces of silver.")

"Tomorrow, tomorrow...can't wait for tomorrow. - Little Orphan Danny" Blaise in KC

The Quad BH?

Boston Celtic Glen Davis used the term "butt hole" during a response to a reporters question. This brought about the reset of others using this term. They were: golfer Boo Weekley, NFLer Steve Smith, and NBA analyst Kenny Smith.
After a commercial break, E mailers came up with the "Quad Butt Hole" and told Jim to use it to replace the "Quad Yeah".  Jim played the four using the term all in a row, but said he would not replace the "Quad Yeah". "...wrong move...not happening...," he concluded.

LeBron on Larry King

Jim asked, "What? Andy Rooney didn't want any of that?" This led to a brief Andy Rooney impression.

Later, an E mailer in the 541 said that Larry King looked like a Muppet. Rome asked, "What part of 'people's appearance is not show fodder' do you not understand?" Jim warned him and said he was only saved by his E mail address, which was something to the effect of "Smokers suck @......"
A few minutes later, the same e mailer wrote in with a Kirstie Ally blast and ......got BLOCKED!

Donte Stallworth Interview on JRIB

Rome replayed the interview from his TV show. He had asked the audience if they wanted to hear it. Many said no. Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian while driving under the influence of alcohol. Jim said he replayed it to see if peoples' reaction would change.
It did not appear that many minds were changed. People still expressed that he didn't get enough jail time and, perhaps shouldn't be getting another chance to play in the NFL.

Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Clones, Comments, and Moments from today's Show

NBA Finals

Jim is picking the Lakers in 7!
(For all Jim's sports takes and guest recaps go to jimrome.com)

Early E mail

"Let's extend the weekend one more day. Signed, Slackers." Brian in Syracuse

Later, someone wrote and asked if last Thursday was Rome's Friday, was today his Monday? Jim said....."No....."

Kendry Morales

The Angels player suffered a fracture in his leg during a team celebration after he hit a walk off grand slam. Today, it spawned E mails.

"Only high 5's and knuckle bump blow ups...anything else is too dangerous" - Kendry Morales.

Others wrote in blaming the music played whenever a homerun is hit at Angel Stadium. "You have to party!"
This brought on a "Sandstorm vs. Zombie thread. Rome said, "This is a Sandstorm house!"

Triple U's

Many Triple U's came in centered around guys at work and there comments when making or missing shots of crumpled up paper to the trash can.
One went something like, "Triple U: The tool that picks up the missed shot and incorporates play by play, 'Rebound, hoop, and the harm!'. "

The Hot Line

This is the line interview guests are given to call. Rome said he wanted the "fish alarm" sounded live on air whenever the hotline rang. He then corrected himself and said it would be the "Bracket Alert" alarm. He didn't want to use the fish alarm because it would send people running! A few minutes later, the alarm sounded as Dallas Braden called.

Dallas Braden

After the interview, an E mail came in: "Dallas is right. Nobody getting to first base is great. Signed, John in Syracuse, 'Bill' Guidry, and Stars Wars virgins."
Craig in Tampa

E mail Contest

One came in from a guy lamenting that he had to go to the movies with his girl only to have to see "Kentucky Derby highlights". (Because he had to see the movie with Sarah Jessica Parker.) He ended with a "War Bums" reference. He got BLOCKED! Rome said it was for the bum reference and not the Kentucky Derby reference.

Text Contest Selections

"Triple U: The guy that calls you out for an "alley-oop" when he walks by the waste basket...."

"...in the spirit of the Grammatica's.....let us back in. Signed, all BLOCKED clones."

Triple U sponsor: "Guys who buy a big screen for a sports events then return them."
