Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley

Summary of today's Jim Rome Show

Live from Los Angeles from Santa Anita Race Track...
Jim broadcasted today live from the site of the 2009 Breeders' Cup. He started, "We are live, trackside, right on the track. We are on the clubhouse turn. We're doing the show from the Trophy Lounge."

Jim spoke of the good weather and the beautiful setting. Royal Punisher is racing today. Jim is a part owner of the horse. The race distance is longer than he is used to. Jim warned the audience, "Don't bet this horse down." He added, "It's either going to be a party or a buzz kill."

NFL
Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams spoke out again. This time he said, "...I'm not a T.O....or I'm not trying to be a T.O.  I don't know why people are trying to put me in that catagory...I'm happy to win."
Rome's take : "...If you're happy to win, why are you complaining about where you're getting the ball....You're right. You're no T.O. In attitude yes, in performance no."

Trackside comment
Rome, "...Looking at Kyle Brandt hugging on my wife's friends."

Guests

Billy Koch (Little Red Feather Racing)
He is the managing partner and founder of Little Red Feather Racing and is credited by Jim for bringing him into the sport. Jim called him a good friend. On the show Billy is famous for his laugh, the tape of which is often played. Jim asked, "Ever think you'd see the day that the Jungle would be trackside at the Breeders' Cup?" Billy replied, "You know, I didn't, but I'm glad you are. It's so important for the sport...The fact that you're here...it shows other people that they, too, can get involved and get this fever...it's a massive adrenaling rush." Jim asked, "How do get that buzz for the average fan...?" Billy, "...I think what you have to do now is sell the stars, make the sport more accessible, ...simplify it." Rome asked why the star horse, Rachel Alexandra is not here. Billy said it was a blow to the sport not to have her here. He said the owner blamed the synthenic racing surface. Billy called that ridiculous, saying, "Unless she's hurt, she should be here."

Rex Chapman (Denver Nuggets VP of personnel)
He too is a horse racing enthusiast. He agreed he would rather be trackside today. Of Royal Punisher, Rex said, "...I think the Punisher's got some obstacles." (Jim replied with a Carl Lewis like,'Oh oh!') Rex continued, "He's got speed a plenty, no question...gonna go to the front but, stretching out and going against some more experienced runners." Of the undefeated philly Zenyatta, Rex commented, "...She's a female version of a Dwight Howard...she's a physical beast specimen." He agreed that Rachel Alexandra should have been here to race Zenyatta.
On the Denver Nuggets, Rex said, "It's early... We've won all our games but I don't know that we've played all that well. I'm optimistic."

Chip Woolley (Thoroughbred Trainer)
He trained Kentucky Derby winner Mind That Bird. The horse has not had a lot of success since The Derby but will run tomorrow. Chip says Mind That Bird has been working good lately..."Now he's really on his game." Asked about the racing surface, Chip responded, "...I'm no fan of the poly tracks but... I won't use an excuse to get beat." Of Zenyatta, Chip added, "I won't make any predictions. I predict she's going to run well. She's a great mare."

Greg Aviola (President of the Breeders' Cup)
Jim asked about having the Cup here for the 2nd year in a row. Greg said it's a good choice because of the expected 90,000 people that would show up over 2 days, the good weather, and the international horses that would be here.  Greg said they learned from last year that they have to be more accomodating to the fans. Since then they've lowered the ticket prices and did not make people buy both days together. He further commented the best way to promote the sport is to have the best horses race each other as they will here at the Breeders' Cup.

Bob McNair (Houston Texans Owner)
He too, is a thoroughbred owner. He used to own many horses but sold them all but one. It was getting too difficult to travel to see all the horses run and run the Houston Texans. His remaining horse is named Cowboy Cal. A young cancer patient that had lived with them used to call Bob's son Cal, "Cowboy Cal". The horse was named in that young cancer patients honor.
The Texans will face the Colts this weekend. Bob is excited about that game and feels they have a chance to pull an upset.

The Race

Jim aired the race live. Royal Punisher went out fast and led just as Jim said he would. he faded after the 2nd turn and finished..."DFL"...Dead Freaking Last!
Rome, "Well, there's not going to be a party trackside. Billy Koch came on and said, "It's an experiment gone bad." Jim, "Can we start drinking?...That doesn't feel real good...After a beat down like that... I need something to pick me up." Yakety Sax was played!
Jim went on, "The truest test ever of Yakety Sax." (The song that is supposed to make any situation better.)
Lastly, "Great horse, bad distance. The Punisher will be back."

  1. Hey man. That's awesome that you went to Santa Anita and saw some clones there. I didn't hear that show and that's a little too much horse racing for me, but your write up was interesting and it sounded like a pretty good time.

Keep up the good work, I like reading your blog even if I don't comment on every entry.
