Jim Rome Clone Report
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Live from Portland, this is the Jim Rome Show...
Jim started, "You heard him correctly. What is up? Another Jungle roadie."
He was broadcasting to day from 95.5 the Game in Portland Oregon.
First up:
Oregon vs USC
Oregon beats USC. Rome's take: "That was pure and simply a mug job. The fact that Oregon beat USC is not surprising to me. But to beat them in the manner in which they did was shocking. Nobody lays that kind of beat down on USC...They ripped their manhood. Straight up. Oregon is a much better team and they proved it. I never thought I would see the day that a Pete Carroll team would get embarrassed that badly."
World Series
The Yankees beat the Phillies and take a 3-1 series lead. Jim commented, "My man, Brad Lidge...dragging his gas can to the bump with him last night and not pouring any gasoline on the infield until he was a single strike away from getting out of the 9th."
Guest
Nate McMillan (Portland Trailblazers)
Jim asked him about a message he gave to the team. Nate said it was ..."to hold each other accountable for what's happening on the court." He also spoke of having Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Brandon Roy on the floor at the same time being fairly new, getting into the playoffs last year, and the ultimate goal of winning a championship. Of Brandon Roy, he said, "He is an organization's dream to have."
Portland Airport
Rome loves Portland International. He told us, "It's like a playground. It's like Hollywood, but better...Not to go Mike Leach...If you want a place to go to on a first date...Take her to the airport...I'll give you 100 bucks to take my seat so I can take a later flight."
Portland and the Jungle
Jim: "Maybe the best tour stop, if not the best moment...when I came out of a Blackhawk helicopter."
Portland callers: Chad in Portland: He is also a co-host of the morning show there. Jim played some sound clips and mentioned Chad's love of sending "Erv" E mails to the Jungle.
Will in Portland: ...he of the , "I call 'em hors d'oeuvres, 'cause you're gonna get ate up" fame.
Guest
Brandon Roy
He said they needed that win over Oklahoma City for their confidence. Jim brought up Brandon being the face of the franchise and the go between when it comes to the players and coach Nate McMillan. Brandon said it's a fine line to navigate. He tries to be honest with both sides, coach and players.
Afterword Rome said, "Great player, great leader...and still only in his 4th year."
Minnesota vs Green Bay
Of the Packers, Jim commented, "They're fighting out of their weight class." Of Brett Favre, "..he is not finished. Brett Favre was really hurt last year." Of the game, "I thought it would be different thes time. But it wasn't. The Packers were the ones having a hard time with the moment, not Favre...They (Vikings) look like a Superbowl team."
Other Guests
Brian Grant (Former NBAer)
He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He said it has been a tough 3 years, but it's getting better. First depression (related to, but before the diagnosis), then strain on his marriage, then the actual diagnosis. But his faith, children, and the community of Portland and the Blazers have kept him going. They spoke of his depression at length. Then Brian talk of things starting with a tremor in his hand. After being told he had Young Onset Parkinson's, Brian's athletic and competitive drive kicked in. He went on a health and exercise regimen. He was put in touch with Michael J. Fox, who called him. Fox was helpful. For info. go to BrianGrant.org
Jeremiah Masoli (Oregon Ducks QB)
"How you doing, Mr. Rome", he started. He said it felt like 200,000 fans were there. Jim asked why he appeared so relaxed. Masoli said it was their confidence going into the game. He didn't really answer questions about a changing of the guard in the Pac 10 or where they belong in the rankings. He just said they would work hard to prepare to do what they had to in each game. He ended with, "Thanks Rome...love you Momma."
