Jim Rome Clone Report by Greg in Sun Valley
Jim Rome is on Vacation
Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Today's guest host was Dave "Softy" Mahler from Seattle.
Dave began the show with the NFL. The NFL and college football topics dominated the show.
Former NFL coaches available to be hired according to Dave:
Bill Cowher
Mike Shanahan
Brian Billick
Mike Holmgren
Jon Gruden
NFL QB's
Dave cited the amazing play of some quarterbacks this year.
Peyton Manning
Brett Favre
Drew Brees
Tom Brady
Philip Rivers
NFL MVP "race"
Daves takes:
Brett Favre - QB rating over 140 against the Seahawks
Fewest INT's so far
Passer rating of 122.8 when the ball travels over 21 yards in the
air. (NFL average is 62.8)
112 QB rating (NFL average is 83.7)
Also, Dave is amazed that Brett is doing this at age 40. He said, "I can make a serious case that Brett Favre is the best player in the NFL ...and that he should be the MVP this year."
Peyton Manning : "Phenomenal"
Drew Breees : "Unbelievable"
Tom Brady : "Does it all"
College Football
Heisman Trophy
Boise State QB Kellon Moore was brought up. He is one of the leading QB's in the country stat-wise. Dave says he won't get the Heisman because he has only played one BCS team this year.
Dave's 3 finalists: 1. Colt McCoy, QB Texas
2. Mark Ingram, RB Alabama
3. Toby Gerhart, RB Stanford
Notre Dame
Charlie Weis is apparently on his way out as Notre Dame coach according to Dave, who said, "He doesn't want to have anything to do with Notre Dame."
Dave said Weis said things like, "I'd understand if they fired me...My wife can't even go to games..."
Guests
Ross Tucker (Sports Illustrated)
Ross leans toward Peyton Manning for MVP at this point, saying, "...He's done more with less...They can't run the football whatsoever...We lean away from Peyton because we're so used to this...almost every year you've grown so accustom to this level of excellence from Peyton...although Brett Favre has been utterly amazing..." Ross thinks there will be drama during the off season again with Brett Favre. He also spoke about Mike Holmgren and Vince Young during the interview.
Steve Sarkisian (Washinton Huskies Football Coach)
This is his first year as head coach. The Huskies are 3-7. Steve says they are an improved team that has gained the respect of their opponents. He feels they had 3 or 4 games where they had a chance to win late in the game but came up short. "That's the difference between being a 7-3 team and a 3-7 team", Steve said. He told us they are a young team and added, "I think we'll get better in time and hopefully those wins come in time where we're competing for a conference championship."
