Summary of today's Jim Rome Show
Lane Kiffin
Jim began, "And you probably know where. I'm going to start. Lane Kiffin. Lane 'freaking' Kiffin...Welcome back to Holllywood...This is an incredible story...First Man Ram, then Ron Ron, and now Lane. It's almost too good to be true. What next, Ochocinco signing with the NFL team that we still don't have here?...Even for a game as nasty and as filthy as College Football, Lane Kiffin busting out of Knoxville for USC after only on year is incredible. Bobby Petrino thinks this cat has a crazy brass set. As for USC, it's either going to go down as the greatest or worst hire ever...but for now it's just a colossal middle finger to the NCAA..."
Of USC athletic director, Mike Garrett hiring Lane Kiffin, who "couldn't follow the rules at Tennessee" while the NCAA is "looking like it's going to bring the hammer down", Jim said, "...That's brazen, and it's desperate, and it's strangely brilliant...Garrett works a miracle...given the circumstances, that is a miraculous save..."
And finally, "I've said it a dozen times on this program but I never meant it more than I do now..."Coach 'em up, Lane!"
Tennessee
Rome: "What an ugly scene that was last night. The students at Tennessee are looking to riot..."
E mail "war"
"War Yakety Sax to cheer up the Vol nation." (The song famous for being the "Benny Hill Show" song was played.)
Caller
A guy called in with a Lane Kiffin parody sung to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies theme. Jim gave him a D+
LaDanian Tomlinson
An old rap video of a commercial that didn't make it to air hit YouTube. Jim said it was corny but he liked it and played it a few times in the show.
Interviews
Lawrence Jackson (Seattle Seahawks)
Jim asked him about Lane Kiffin coming to USC. LJ felt it was good that USC wouldn't drop off from their philosophy. Of Pete Carroll coming to Seattle, LJ said in part, "...it's exciting to know that the guy who made me who I was, and the guy responsible for that development is now coming to the NFL and giving me a chance...to be a great player in this league."
Jim went back to Lane Kiffin. He asked LJ it he trusts Lane. "Oh definately...anybody in America would almost have to be crazy to turn down that job...,"he said. Rome also asked him about his challenges in transitioning from college to the NFL. LJ spoke of growing up and being an adult and experiencing responsibility. He also talked about being more than a football player and of wanting to be able to offer society something after his playing days are over.
Mo Williams (Cleveland Cavaliers)
The Cavs have a 5 games in 5 cities in 8 nights road trip. Mo agreed with Jim that they have a bullseye on them and get everyone's best shot every night. Of Lebron James, Mo said in part, "...He's a great teammate. It's easy to play with him...I feel like we compliment each other real well." They also spoke about last year's playoff run. Mo feels more prepared this year.
Of Delonte West, Mo told us he is doing well. Mo thinks being with the team helps - it's all positive, it's all basketball. At the end of the interview, Mo asked Jim about the famous Tony Gwinn clip where he talks about Ricky Henderson.
Shaun Phillips (San Diego Chargers)
Jim started with LT's video. Shaun liked the old guy in the video.
Shaun told Jim that practice is going well. He said their game plan against the Jets is to go out there and do what they do best. Shaun led the NFL with 7 forced fumbles. He said he is always looking to make a play and feels that getting his offense the ball will usually lead to a score. He told Jim he thinks the Jets' Darrelle Revis is the best cornerback in the league.
